a love undeserved

“For you are a holy people to the Lord your God. The Lord chose you to be a people for his treasured possession…it was not because you were more in number than any other people that the Lord set his love on you and chose you…but it was because the Lord loves you…”

– Deuteronomy 7:6-8

What an incredible passage. I love how cyclical it is and how it kind of doesn’t even make sense when you think about it.

Do you see what it says there?

It is basically saying “it’s not because of anything good in you that the Lord loves you…but it’s just because the Lord loves you.”

He doesn’t even list a good reason for loving us. And He doesn’t need one.

God loves us because he loves us. Because of who He is.

Just pause and rest on this truth.  It is out of no merit of your own. It has absolutely nothing to do with you. It is solely out of His great love that He loves you. He pursues you and loves you, even though your feelings may waver and wane.

Some find this hard to accept. We wonder how in the world someone could love all of us when they truly see all of us, all our sin and fears and failures?

But God loves you…just because he loves you. Not because of you, not because of your righteousness, your personality, your upstanding morals, or your character. He loves you despite your sin and even in the midst of your unfaithfulness.

We are so undeserving. It is such a beautiful love! And such a wonderful Lover.

All we have to do is to receive it. To put our entire trust in this God who has proved himself to be eternally good and loving and faithful. To understand our unworthiness, but wholeheartedly receive the love the Lord has lavished upon us.

May our lives and our love towards him be a song of adoration and praise.

He is worthy.

“Worthy are You, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power”

– Revelation 4:11
