“for you are a holy people to the Lord your God. The Lord chose you to be a people for his treasured possession…it was not because you were more in number than any other people that the Lord set his love on you and chose you…but it was because the Lord loves you…” – Deuteronomy 7:6-8
Oh what an incredible passage. I love how cyclical it is and how it kind of doesn’t even make sense when you think about it. Do you see what it says there? It is basically saying “it’s not because of anything good in you that the Lord loves you…but it’s because the Lord loves you.” HAH! He doesn’t even have a good reason for loving us. And He doesn’t need one. He loves us because he loves us. Because of who He is.
Just pause and rest on this truth. It is out of no merit of my own. It has absolutely nothing to do with me. It is solely out of His great love that He loves me. He pursues me and loves me, even though my feelings waver and wane. Sometimes it is so hard for me to accept His love for me. I wonder how in the world someone could love all of me. I mean, why would they when they see me, all my sin and fears and failures? But He loves me…just because he loves me. Not because of me, not because of my righteousness, my personality, my upstanding morals, or my character. He loves me despite my sin and even in the midst of my unfaithfulness. I am so completely undeserving. Oh, it is such a beautiful love! And such a wonderful Lover. I am amazed and so overwhelmed.
Yes, I don’t understand it. I never will. And I don’t deserve it. But I will receive it. And I will devote my life to and put my entire trust in this God who has proved himself to be eternally good and loving and faithful. Oh I pray that I would understand my unworthiness but wholeheartedly receive the love the Lord has lavished upon me. May my life and my love towards him be a song of adoration and praise. He is worthy.
“worthy are You, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power” – Revelation 4:11
